'CLUCK!' for the Horde

by Dustbunny

For those who don't know, there's a hidden alliance-only quest called CLUCK! By completing this quest, players receive their very own Chicken Egg to summon a Prairie Chicken. Most people think this is an alliance-only pet. Won't they be surprised when they see a white chicken with your horde character!smile

'CLUCK!'

1. Understanding the quest

To understand how to obtain the pet as a hordie, you must first understand the alliance-only quest.

For an alliance player, the quest works as follows: Find a chicken and do the '/chicken' emote at it over and over. It's best to make a '/chicken' macro because it can take over a hundred emotes before the chicken will respond. Watch your chat log carefully. At some point, the chicken's name plate will turn from yellow to green and you will get the message "Chicken looks up at you quizzically. Maybe you should inspect it?"

CAUTION CAUTION: When spamming your '/chicken' macro, don't go too quickly. If you accidentally do another /chicken emote AFTER the chicken responds, you will have to start all over again.

Speak to the chicken and you'll receive the 'CLUCK!' quest. At this point, you'll need a bag of Special Chicken Feed from Farmer Saldean in Westfall. Not surprisingly, he has many chickens on his farm. This is why many players opt to do the quest right there at his farmhouse.

Once you have the feed, head back to your chicken (or any chicken for that matter), target it and perform '/chicken' followed by '/cheer' and the chicken will reveal a yellow quest-completed question mark above its head. Talk to the chicken to finish the quest. Upon completing the quest, an egg will spawn on the ground near the chicken. Loot the egg and you've got yourself a Prairie Chicken to call your very own.

For the Horde!

2. Exploring your options

For horde players, it's not so easy. You can start the quest by repeating '/chicken' at any chicken. However, it will turn hostile as soon as it's ready to offer the quest. Any horde character who tries to speak to it will simply wind up killing it. So don't bother buying the feed at the neutral auction house—unfortunately, it will do you no good.

The only way to get this pet for a horde character is to have an alliance character finish the quest. Once the egg spawns, any player, horde or alliance, may loot it. Luckily, you can do this in a few different ways.

3. Alliance Assistance (option 1)

The most obvious solution involves getting an Alliance player to help you. If you don't know anyone on the alliance side on your realm, try getting in touch with someone on your realm's official warcraft.com forum. One thing that might work is to arrange a trade. If the alliance player helps you get the chicken, you can help the Alliance player in some way.

For example, if they're a hunter, your could help them tame Echeyakee, a white lion that only Horde players can summon. Perhaps someone will just help you out of kindness—though, on a PvP server, they may just be planning to ruin your day.

You could also offer gold to the player. Gold can be traded cross-faction when any cheap poor-quality item is put up for auction for an agreed upon amount of coin. However, keep in mind that the neutral AH will take a 15% cut.

This option clearly has a few drawbacks. You might be better off attempting to do this on your own. "But how?" you ask... read on.

4. Do-it-Yourself: PvE Server (option 2)

If you're on a PvE (or an RP server), you can use the trick I used to get mine. Run your Horde character to Saldean's Farm in Westfall and park it behind the house. There should be plenty of chickens around. Log out and create a human alliance alt. Play the character for as long as it takes to earn 25c (the cost of the chicken feed). It shouldn't take long at all. Then run this alt to Saldean's Farm, sticking to the main roads to avoid hostile mobs.

Being such a low level character, you'll probably be killed by coyotes once you're near the farm. No biggie. Try to rez inside Farmer Saldean's house. After rezzing, create your '/chicken' macro and put it on your action bar. Finally, buy a bag of Special Chicken Feed from Farmer Saldean and log out.

After you've logged out with your alliance alt, log back in with your horde character (who ideally should be at least level 15+) and quickly kill all the coyotes near the farm. You may even want to kill any nearby harvest reapers, just to be safe. This will allow your low-level alliance character to do the quest without being attacked. Choose a chicken and logout at the bird's location.

Now log back in with your alliance character. Target the chicken you chose and spam your macro, making sure to pace yourself while watching the chat pane carefully. Follow the instructions in the first part of this guide to complete the quest. Once you've finished the quest, DO NOT loot the egg! Instead, quickly log out. Immediately log back in with your Horde character and the egg should be waiting for you. Loot it and you'll have your very own horde Prairie Chicken!

CAUTION CAUTION: Once the egg spawns, anyone can loot it. If a horde-hating alliance player should figure out what you're up to, they may try and grief you by looting the egg before your horde character can. So, if you're planning to get the egg solo, it's best to do it when few people are around. Early morning works well.

5. Do-it-Yourself: PvP Server (option 3)

A third option is ideal for a PvP server. While this method is a bit unorthodox, it is not against the Terms of Use. You cannot create a character of the opposing faction on your own account, but you can do so using a trial account. 10-Day FREE trial accounts can be obtained online here.

Once the account is activated, follow the steps from option 2 above. The only difference is that you'll have to log out of your trial account completely once the egg spawns and relog on your horde character's account. This will take 15-30 more seconds than if both characters were on the same account, so it's even more crucial to make sure no one else is around when you do this. That is, unless you combine this option with option 4 below...

6. Dual-Box It! (option 4)

A fourth and final option might work for you if you multi-box, also known as dual-boxing. Multi-boxing is when someone plays multiple characters (usually just two) using multiple Warcraft accounts simultaneously. Sometimes this is done using different computers, but more often it is done by running more than one instance of WoW on the same computer, provided the system can run both. So if you already own more than one account and you're used to playing both at once, you're set! If not, you could always activate a second FREE account as noted in option 3 above and attempt to play both at the same time.

It's fairly obvious how this works. Play one account with an alliance character and another account with your horde character and follow the steps in option 2. Only with this method, you'll never need to log out and risk losing your egg to someone else. Furthermore, it will work on any server-type: PvE, RP, and most importantly, PvP.

Author's Note

Though this information is fairly easy to find, I still get people asking me where I got my chicken in-game. Of course, it's my little secret. And I've never seen another horde player on my server who had one. But now my secret is out.wink
