Farming for Peddlefeet

by Breanni

Discover the best methods for farming the elusive Peddlefeet, the small pet summoned by the Truesilver Shafted Arrow. This guide can also be used to farm for other rare drops during the Love is in the Air event, such as the Romantic Picnic Basket and Lovely Black Dress.

UPDATED!
December 2008: Beginning in 2009 it is no longer possible to farm for Peddlefeet. All gifts and pledges of adoration will be soulbound. However, we're hoping this change goes hand in hand with a higher drop rate for the Truesilver Shafted Arrow. As soon as we know for sure, we'll post it in our news section.

About the Event

1. Who is Peddlefeet

Kwee Q. Peddlefeet is a tiny goblin cupid who appears during the Love is in the Air World of Warcraft event (February 11-16). He also happens to be one of the more difficult companion pets to obtain. This is in part because the Truesilver Shafted Arrow that summons him only drops during this once-a-year, six-day event. And the fact that the drop rate is less than 2% only makes matters worse.

TIP TIP: The Truesilver Shafted Arrow is sometimes confused with the much more common Silver Shafted Arrow, so be vigilant and make sure you're farming for the correct item.wink

So how on Azeroth does the obsessive small pet collector get this rare pet? One word: farming. But farming for Peddlefeet is unlike farming for any other vanity pet, as you'll discover. And using the methods explained herein, your almost assured to nab him before the event is over.

2. Other rare drops

Love is in the Air brings WoW players other rare, once-per-year drops as well. These include the Lovely Black Dress and the Romantic Picnic Basket. Although the picnic basket is a blue item (denoting superior quality and rarity), the black dress is actually quite a bit more rare. There is roughly a 10% drop rate for the picnic basket, as compared to less than 2% for the dress. Additionally, the picnic basket is BoP (just like the Truesilver Shafted Arrow) while the Lovely Black Dress will never become soulbound, allowing it to be auctioned for high profits year-round.

The methods described below to farm for Peddlefeet will work just as well to farm for either of these rare items.

Understanding the Drop

3. How it works

Before you begin to farm for Peddlefeet, you must understand how the drop works, since it's rather unique. Peddlefeet, as well as the other rare drops, are dropped by two items you can receive during the event: Gift of Adoration: {City} and Pledge of Adoration: {City}. Both items have the same chance to drop Peddlefeet and either can be otained in any major city.

To receive a pledge/gift of adoration, you must first see an innkeeper. Any innkeeper will do, whether you're in a big city or not. Purchase a stack of love tokens for 10c and either a cologne bottle or a perfume bottle at 1s each. The next step is to apply your fragrance of choice and speak to a city guard. If you use cologne, you'll want to speak with female guards; perfume, male guards. Then, depending on your luck, you'll either experience adoration or heartbreak.

4. Adoration

About 90% of the time, you'll receive either a gift or a pledge of adoration. Pledges drop for lower level characters while gifts drop for higher levels. Other than that, the two are identical. Even a level 1 character can farm for Peddlefeet. Hmmm... I sense an opportunity...smile

Once you've recieved your gift, you'll notice you also received an Adoration debuff. This debuff prevents you from getting another gift/pledge for an hour of real time. If you have lots of alts on your server, you can cycle through all of them, trying for Peddlefeet with each. However, you'd need a lot of alts to farm for the full hour. Luckily, there are additional options to speed your progress.

FYI FYI: The Adoration debuff used to be a played-time debuff—the clock only counted down while you remained in-game on that specific character. However, this was changed as of 2008's Love is in the Air event, allowing players to farm by cycling through alts with much greater ease.

There is something else worth noting about your gift/pledge—it is NOT soulbound. However, some of the items within are bind-on-pickup, including the Truesilver Shafted Arrow. So you can check the contents without looting them and then mail the pledge/gift to the character whom you'd like to have the pet, so long as that character is the same faction as your alt.

CAUTION CAUTION: Even though gifts/pledges of adoration can be traded to alts within your faction, they cannot be traded cross-faction through neutral auction houses. In fact, it's impossible to auction anything containing lootable items.

5. Heartbreak

The other possible outcome after speaking with a guard is heartbreak and heartbreak is never a good thing. In this case, you'll get a debuff that prevents you from wooing guards, and thus obtaining any gifts/pledges of adoration. Fortunately, heartbreak strikes only about 10% of the time, but when it does it can be a pain in the as—er, heart.

Should you suffer from a heartbreak (and you almost surely will as you farm), you'll need another player to mend your broken heart. The player must use an unbestowed friendship bracelet which is a stackable item that drops in abundance in gifts/pledges throughout this event. If you're playing during peak hours, you'll rarely have trouble finding someone to mend your heart. Simply ask around in any populated area (such as near a mailbox or auction house). During off-peak hours, it may take a bit more time but be persistent and someone will eventually dispel your broken heart. Once your heart is mended, you can try for that gift/pledge of adoration again.

The Task at Hand

6. The farming conundrum

Let's recap what we know about farming for these gifts/pledges of adoration:

Truesilver Shafted Arrow
Truesilver Shafted
Arrow
  1. They only drop during the 'Love is in the Air' event, i.e., February 11-16.
  2. They only drop from the guards in major cities (expansion cities are excluded).
  3. They can only be obtained once per hour per character.
  4. When looted, they give up Peddlefeet less than 2% of the time.
  5. Gifts/pledges themselves are not soulbound.
  6. Any level character can obtain them.

Okay. So let's assume we only have a single character. If we were to farm nonstop for the entire event with that same character without stopping to eat or sleep (yeah, we really want this pet!), we'd have 144 chances at best. The odds state that your Truesilver Shafted Arrow would probably drop one of those times. But then again, it's entirely possible that it wouldn't. And who can honestly play for six days nonstop? Your diehard player might be able to play for 48 hours over six days, but that's a real stretch for a more casual player. So realistically, our chances would be more like 25-35% and those are some pretty subpar odds.

7. The farming solution

As stated above, gifts/pledges can only be obtained once per hour using the same charcter. But since gifts/pledges are not soulbound, you don't have to farm them with your main. And a level 1 character has just as good a chance to get Peddlefeet as a character at the max level. So it's time to put some alts on farming detail!smile

If you have ten characters on the same server (or different servers if you don't mind which of one receives the pet), you can simply station all of them in major cities and cycle through them every hour. This increases your chances to obtain the drop by roughly 1000%! Feels good to be an altoholic, doesn't it?wink

But what about those of you with only a few characters? Or perhaps you have just one character? What about your options? Luckily, if you fall into those categories, this guide has you covered. Read on...

8. Before you begin

If you already have a lot of alts on the same server (and of the same faction, assuming you care which character receives the pet), then technically you've got everything you need to begin farming. Simply station each of your alts in your faction's capital cities and cycle through them every hour until you get your prize. You can even create a few level 1 alts and run them to their capital city to help your farming efforts, maxing out your character slots on that realm. Easy enough, right?

The farming options in the next section are really intended for players who don't meet the requirements outlined above. Each option involves creating level 1 alts that you'll be using to farm. Remember, Peddlefeet can't be traded cross-faction. So be sure to create alts of the same faction as the character you intend to send the pet.

Here are some tips for creating your alts, broken down by faction:

Alliance: The races with the closest and most accessible capital cities on the Alliance side are the humans, draenei, and night elves, in that order. While the class you pick doesn't honestly matter, I'd suggest going with a melee class, since they can actually make you gold with their shirts (see section 12).

Horde: The horde races with the closest capital cities are the orcs, blood elves, and undead, respectively. While the class doesn't honestly matter, I'd suggest going with a melee class, since they can actually make you gold with their shirts (see section 12).

TIP TIP: If selling shirts is a side goal, you might consider using blood elves more often than orcs. They have to run a bit further to reach their city, but they do offer a better variety of starting shirts that could fetch you a bit more gold on the AH.

Both Factions: Regardless of your faction, try to use a short name—the shorter, the better. For the sake of simplicity, you'll want to use similar names for each alt. I'd suggest picking a two or three letter name, such as 'Sam' or 'Al' (like the Quantum Leap reference?) and then adding a number spelled out as you create each successive alt. For example: Samone, Samtwo, Samthree, etc.

Another time-saving tip is to create a macro to use repeatedly by all of your farming alts. Simply copy and paste the following into a macro created under your General Macros tab. Choose a macro icon and name the macro "Heartbreak" or something similar. You should then add this macro to the hotbar of all of your farming characters and use it whenever you experience heartbreak.

/say Would someone kindly unbreak my heart?
CAUTION CAUTION: Regardless of which option you choose to farm, be sure that your "Auto Loot Corpse" is turned off. You can toggle this in "Options → Interface → Basic (tab) → Controls (section)".

Farming Options

9. Juggling alts (option 1)

Will this work for me?

This option works well if you have a small number of characters sharing a realm with the character whom you want to give Peddlefeet. Note that other options may work better, so be sure to review each before making your choice.

Overview:

You'll be creating several level 1 alts in different starting areas and bringing them all to their respective capital cities. When your army of alts is in place, you'll cycle through all of them (including your main) to farm for your Truesilver Shafted Arrow.

Alliance steps:
  1. Bring your existing alliance character(s) to Ironforge.
  2. Speak to an innkeeper in the city and purchase either cologne or perfume and 10 love tokens. Then apply your fragrance of choice.
Make your choice based on the number of male or female guards in the area who have hearts over their heads. If you spot more female guards, use cologne. Male, use perfume.
  3. Offer a love token to the first guard you see with a heart over his/her head. Remember to speak with the appropriate gender based on your chosen fragrance. During peak hours, you may have to hunt a bit for a guard with a heart.
  4. Should you become heartbroken, run toward the bank and auction house and see if anyone milling about can mend it. Once your heart is healed, try again.
  5. If you get a pledge, open but DO NOT LOOT your gift (unless you're looting it with the character you intend to keep Peddlefeet).
  6. Check for a Truesilver Shafted Arrow. If you received it, mail the package off to the character whom you wish to have Peddlefeet. If you did not receive it, log out.
  7. Create an alt and login to the game. Choose either humans, draenei, or night elves. Hit the 'Esc' key to bypass the introduction.
  8. Run your character to its capital city, following the main roads. Logout at the mailbox near the bank.
While it may be tempting to take a shortcut, it's best to stick to the roads. You should exit the road only if you're certain that there are no hostile mobs in the area.
  9. Logon with your main. Send 5-10 silver to your new character.
  10. Log back in with your level 1 alt and retrieve your coin from the mail.
  11. Repeat steps 2 through 11. At step 7, choose a different race than the one you picked last time. Continue repeating these steps until you've used up all of the available characters slots for your realm.
  12. You should now have an army of alts stationed in all of your faction's captial cities. Cycle through each, varying the city you farm each time. This ensures that you're more likely to find a guard in need of a token. By the time you've earned a pledge with each of your characters, nearly an hour will have passed and you can repeat the process again and again, until you snag your prize!
Horde steps:
  1. Bring your existing horde character(s) to Thunderbluff.
Choose either orcs, blood elves, or undead.
TIP TIP: After you've received your Peddlefeet, be sure to logon with each of the alts you created before you delete them. Send your remaining silver along with your level 1 shirt to your main for auctioning. You might also want to mail your main any pledge packages full of other useful items you obtained while farming, such as chocolates and target dummies (love fools).

10. Running alts (option 2)

Will this work for me?

This option is ideal if the character whom you want to give Peddlefeet shares his/her realm with up to eight other characters of both factions. To use this option, you must have at least one character slot open. Note that other options may work better, so be sure to review each before making your choice.

Overview:

You'll be creating a series of level 1 alts, farming with them one at a time. You'll run each alt to the closest major city, get your pledge, and if it doesn't contain a Truesilver Shafted Arrow, you'll delete the alt and try again with a new character, repeating as necessary. You'll also use your main (and any other alts you regulary play on that realm) to help your farming efforts.

Alliance steps:
  1. Position any of your existing characters that you want to use to farm in capital cities other than Stormwind.
  2. Create a human alt—one that will be repeatedly deleted while the timers tick down on other characters.
For the sake of simplicity, choose a short name. You'll want to use this same name repeatedly as you farm.
  3. Cycle through your farming characters, earning pledges/gifts with each, until all of them have the Adoration debuff. Additionally, use your main to mail a fragrance (perfume or cologne) and 1s to your new human alt.
  4. Login to the game with your human alt. Hit the 'Esc' key to bypass the introduction.
  5. Run your character south, following the road to Goldshire. Retrieve fragrance and coin from mailbox.
While it may be tempting to cut through the woods and go directly to Stormwind, it's best to stick to the road to Goldshire. This allows you to hit up the guards outside of the city. You should exit the road only when you're sure there are no hostile mobs in the area.
  6. Apply your fragrance and speak to the Goldshire innkeeper to purchase 10 love tokens.
  7. Run your character northwest to Stormwind.
  8. Offer a love token to the first guard you see with a heart over his/her head. Remember to speak with the appropriate gender based on your chosen fragrance. During peak hours, you may have to hunt a bit for a guard with a heart.
  9. Should you become heartbroken, run toward the bank and see if anyone milling about can mend it. Unless very few people are online, it's almost always more worthwhile to find someone to mend your heart than it is to begin another character. Once your heart is healed, try again.
  10. If you get a pledge, open but DO NOT LOOT your gift.
  11. Check for a Truesilver Shafted Arrow. If you received it, mail the package off to the character whom you wish to have Peddlefeet. If you did not receive it, mail your fragrance and extra coin to your main, log out, delete the character (if you have no slots left), and repeat steps 2 through 11.
  12. Optional step: Before deleting your character, you may also send your shirt to your main (or any auctioning character). Auctioning this item can net you 50s-2g as described below. You might also want to send your actual pledge package to another of your characters. Boxes of chocolates and target dummies (love fools) can be useful combat consumables.
Horde steps:
  1. Position any of your existing characters that you want to use to farm in capital cities other than Orgrimmar.
  2. Create an orc (or troll) alt—one that will be repeatedly deleted while the timers tick down on other characters.
For the sake of simplicity, choose a short name. You'll want to use this same name repeatedly as you farm.
  3. Cycle through your farming characters, earning pledges/gifts with each, until all of them have the Adoration debuff. Additionally, use your main to mail a fragrance (perfume or cologne) and 1s to your new orc or troll alt.
  4. Login to the game with your orc alt. Hit the 'Esc' key to bypass the introduction.
  5. Run your character east out of the starting area, and then north, following the road to Razor Hill. Retrieve fragrance and coin from mailbox.
While it may be tempting to cut through the wilderness, it's best to stick to the road. You should exit the road only when you're sure there are no hostile mobs in the area.
  6. Apply your fragrance and speak to the Razor Hill innkeeper to purchase 10 love tokens.
  7. Run your character nort to Orgrimmar.

11. Portalling alts (option 3)

Will this work for me?

This option is the fastest farming method available, but it has strict requirements. You must have a level 50+ mage and you must also dual-box (play two accounts). Note that other options may work better, so be sure to review each before making your choice.

Overview:

You'll use your high level mage to portal level 1 alts (created on your other account) to a capital city. Each alt will farm for pledges, hearth back to the starting area, and trade them to the mage. This process can be repeated until you receive your Peddlefeet.

Steps (both factions):
  1. Have your mage on your first account visit a reagent vendor and purchase several stacks of Rune of Portals.
How many runes should you purchase? That all depends on how much gold you want to spend. These reagents aren't cheap when you're buying them in bulk. Start with three stacks of 20 and if you need more, you can always portal to a city yourself and buy them. Any leftover runes can be stored in your bank for later use.
  2. Visit an innkeeper and purchase 6-8 bottles of cologne and 6-8 bottles of perfume.
  3. Bring your mage to the starting area of your choice.
  4. Create an alt on your second account in the chosen starting area and login to the game. Hit the 'Esc' key to bypass the introduction.
  5. Have your mage invite the new alt into a group. Trade him/her 20c, 1 bottle of cologne, and 1 bottle of perfume.
  6. Teleport the alt to a major city.
  7. Have your alt purchase tokens at the city's inn.
  8. Look around. Note the number of female vs. male guards in the area. If there are more male guards, apply perfume. More female, apply cologne.
Once your fragrance is applied, if you cannot find any guards of the right gender with a heart, you can always apply the other fragrance.
  9. Obtain a pledge from a guard and hearth back to the starting area.
  10. Trade the pledge, the cologne and perfume, and your level 1 shirt to your mage. The shirt can be sold at auction for a bit of gold (see below).
  11. Open but DO NOT LOOT your pledge. If you did not receive a Truesilver Shafted Arrow, repeat steps 4 through 11.

Making Gold as You Farm

12. Sell your level 1 shirts

Believe it or not, level 1 shirts sell at auction. Usually they bring in 50s-2g each. These shirts are exclusive to lowbie characters, so there is actually a market for them at higher levels. Most people would rather just pay a gold or two for a shirt than take the time to run a level 1 alt to a mailbox. So be sure to send your level 1 shirt to another character for later auctioning before you delete the alt. And change up your class as you farm so that you get a nice variety of different shirts. Trust me—you can make a good bit of gold from lowbie shirts!

Note that robes don't tend to sell, so stick with shirts (primarily melee classes).

TIP TIP: To get top dollar for your level 1 shirts, only post 1-2 of the same shirt at a time. And if there are already any of these shirts on the auction block, put them up at a later time. When the market is saturated with too much of one item, it never tends to do as well at auction.

13. Sell other rare items

As stated earlier in the guide, other rare items drop from gifts/pledges during this event. Perhaps the rarest is the Lovely Black Dress. This is a non-soulbound vanity item that is often in high demand due to its low drop rate. Depending on the server and time of year, it can go for hundreds of gold at auction. So if you manage to get one of these gems, you'll have to decide whether you'd prefer to be sexy or rich.wink

The Romantic Picnic Basket is a new item, added in 2008. Even though this item is soulbound, the pledge container is not. Therefore, you may advertise it in the trade channel until you have a buyer. I imagine someone looking for this item specifically would pay several gold to get it. So if you manage to snag one of these, take the time to try and sell it to another player. Or, if you prefer, send it to one of your own alts who's looking forlove.

When Love Leaves the Air

14. The end of the event

When the event ends, the quest elements are removed. However the guards will retain the hearts over their heads until all of them have been wooed (or until the next maintenance period, I imagine). No new hearts will appear, but as long as you have cologne/perfume and tokens leftover, you can try to find any lingering guards in need of a token, thereby giving you a few more shots at your prize.

When all is said and done, any of the farming options discussed in this guide will help you nab Peddlefeet (or any of the other rare drops) much faster. Still, all of these methods are entirely dependent on your luck. If your luck is God-aweful, it may take over 20 hours before you get your little cupid friend. But as a pet collector, you're probably used to farming sessions lasting much longer than that, so 20+ hours really isn't so bad. And spread over six days, it's quite doable.

15. Author's note

So how did farming for Peddlefeet work out for me? Well, I managed to get my little arrow-slinging goblin in under four hours. I used option 2. I would've used option 1, but when I got my Peddlefeet in 2007, the Adoration debuff was still a played-time debuff and options 2 and 3 were the only viable ways to farm.

I've heard from other people who've gotten bags full of rare drops, including Peddlefeet, in just a few dedicated hours of farming using the methods described above. And everyone I know who's tried one of these options has managed to get his/her Peddlefeet before the event's end. Farming for anything can be tedious, but patience is the key. Hang in there and that lovestruck little goblin will find his way to your side... eventually.smile
