This pet was formerly known as 'Maine Coon'. Prior to The Shattering, this pet could only be looted by horde as they dropped from the Dalaran Spellscribe, a rare mob that was friendly to alliance. Horde also had a chance of obtaining it from a Dalaran Shield Guard, Dalaran Theurgist, and Dalaran Summoner in the Alterac Mountains. These mobs have since been removed.
After Patch 4.0.3, the Black Tabby was relocated to Hillsbrad Foothills as a zone drop, making it more accessible for alliance.
If Stinker the skunk is nearby, he will fall in love with the Black Tabby and chase it around.
This little guy is especially special to me, as he was actually a Christmas gift from my brother. Back in Cataclysm, I had been farming Hillsbrad Foothills for quite a while trying to get it to drop, but with no luck. On Christmas morning, I checked my mail only to see a wrapped gift from my brother's character. I opened it, in which I found the cute little kitty I had so sought after, along with the message "You finally wanted it enough. Merry Christmas." I was so happy. Such a nice gift. :)
For those who are trying, or want to farm this, I recommend npcscan. Just go into the interface and input a custom npc. Dalaran Spellscribe's ID is 1920. Good luck.
Edit: As of Patch 4.0.3a, The Spellscribe is no more. I hope my input helped for those trying to get it before the patch. Apparently the tabby is now a zone drop in Hillsbrad Foothills as relayed from Wowhead info.
This finally dropped for me today and earned my achievement crazy for cats at 4824 attempts, I am a rogue so slow going but ran the murlocs, infested bears, spiders. gnolls and then some yetis and ogres which is where it dropped for me. good luck to those still hunting.
It took me almost 3 hours of slaughtering everything at Gavin's but I got mine. Woohoo! :DÂ
Thank you for all the tips, they really helped a lot. :D
There are 17 different feline beasts with identical movesets. The only difference (battle wise) is the breed. For the 4 cats that have a breed choice, only the Sand Kitten and the Snow Cub cannot be mimicked by any other breed. The Cheetah Cub is the fastest with 390 speed. The most powerful is the Cornish Rex Cat with 341 power. The healthiest is the B/B Snow Cub with 1481 health. The amount of health restored from using Devour increases with power.
I would suspect it would depend on your class's AOE ability, but the Engineers up at Gavin's Naze (the ones working on the seige vehicles) have a ridiculously fast respawn rate and there are about 20 of them. Â A couple hours of that, I got the Black Tabby Cat. Â 3314 kills. Â I know that's a bit of a lucky percentage drop for this, but mowing through these engineers is the way to go for farming this pet.
The cat is a lie! Also I think I have to break up with the RNG, 16700 kills and counting. - Murlocs and Engineers
So stoked! After many hours of farming in Hillsbrad. I logged in on my second charachter, went to Gavin´s Naze (40.52, 47.41) and farmed Engineers for 15 minutes, and there!!! :) Awesome!
I remember creating a Horde Character just so I could catch this guy. Only one fellow dropped him who spawned every 6 hours or so in 3 different spots. If you killed him the drop chance was extremely low. I caught a few and sold in AH. My Bank Alt accidentally activated one when he went to sell it in AH. This gave me 2 in my pet list when Pet Battles became active Years later. The Cat was one of the first I brought to Level 25 and upgraded from Uncommon to Rare. Love it and the story I have.
Looking for this kitty is the very definition of insanity.
During the months I farmed, I focused on zombies, Gnolls and horses.
The farm zombies at 39,60 respawn instantly and are clustered. Very efficent.
Gnolls and horses both respawn almost as fast, but are more spread out. Less efficient, but a nice change of scenery.
I like to keep my bags FULL for mass-killings so auto loot only takes the MONEY from each kill. I can quickly see whether or not there's a kitty and keep moving.
after killing yetti and ogres till i felt like i was gonna puke I went to the fly thing at Strahnbrad and a spy attacked me and what do you know a tabby cat.. Im so happy. :D
farmed for 2 weeks. trying to get collect 20 felines to get the title "crazy cat lady" finally droped yesterday. dont even know from what i stopped looking till my bags were full. farmed some murlocks but i found it more benifical to farm the snow yetis and turtles because you can at least get skins and mine along the way, so u make some money while grinding. also killed wild horses and stags and bears and an occasional spider. whew. now, back to it to get one for my husband! :)
1727 mobs and counting.... not really lucky yet =(
Im focussing my farm on the Gnolls and some wild horses, every now and then I fly around killing random mobs. Maybe Im doing something wrong..

Gave up after 5000+ kills, found it on the AH for 2k gold, bought it.
Finally found this cute little kitty after several hours of farming. Farmed Murlocs for 2 hours with no luck, then decided to farm the wild horses between Tarren Mill and Durnholde Keep down at the river. Dropped from the 3rd Wild Horse I killed.
Never give up! Your kitty might just be on your next loot!
So so many murdered knolls and naga...FINALLY got it to drop after 10475 kills...and another 500+ on a horde toon...This was too much...but it's over...
