Patch 5.0.1 | Posted: September 25, 2012
This wild pet can be found in The Gaping Chasm and The Noxious Lair in Tanaris. It only spawns during sandstorms.
Level 0: 0 0 0
These hatchlings entertain themselves by clacking their mandibles together in increasingly complex rhythms.
Since I was looking for the information and found it else-where I thought I would share...
Sandstorms are across the ENTIRE ZONE of Tanaris. So if you are camping you dont need to fly between the spawn locations... Hope this helps someone :)
Patch 5.1 Hotfixes - December 10
"Silithid Hatchlings should now be less elusive."Â
They still only seem to spawn during sandstorms but it looks like you don't have to be there only when the storm first appears. Rejoice!!
Logged on to my server, Smolderthorn (Horde) at around 2 am and behold - after weeks of checking, there were finally dual sandstorms over both silithid areas of Tanaris. Battled basically every hatchling I could find - didn't manage to get one rare. Oh well. People on this site tend to be too negative about just grabbing a poor or common and stoning it. I have no pride regarding this subject. I'm a parent, time is precious, my WoW time is increasingly a rare commodity, and if spending 15 charms saves an hour of fruitless searching for a rare, so be it.
Old opinion: Bad pet, a bit too slow and probably bottom of the pile.
Updated opinion: Scratch hits undead REALLY hard, and 260 speed is fast enough to go first against them, which also makes survival more useful. Sandstorm protects against Haunt or BONESTORM. Takes weak damage from Call Darkness, then you can change to Sandstorm so Darkness birds don't get bonus to hit. All in all more useful than I initially thought, but still outclassed by many pets. Works ok against Idol without Demolish.
Mynxie is quite correct..it does appear the best time to catch this guy is be there for the start of a storm. I plopped my dk 2nd acct alt at the chasm at 8am est on Sunday morning, watched all day til finally at 9:03pm est(6:03 crz st) it came in. Each chasm had a few dozen spawns in 2 waves, got mine and stayed to report. All spawns were dead within 20 minutes of start..high number of people. No more hatchlings were spawned for the remaining length of the storm. It ended at 11:10pm est. Hope this helps..happy hunting!
They reportedly spawn only above ground, but only during a sandstorm.
Keep in mind the Special Groups option. I fly into a storm today and helped quite a number of people finally get their own Hatchlings.
Does anyone have semi-reliable info on how often there are sandstorms?? Posting "Sandstorm now on XX realm! ZOMG!" doesn't help those of us who aren't on your realm or can't get to Tanaris quickly....
Got mine a couple days ago while doing the Candy Bucket run for Hallow's End. Flying over I noticed spawns, did not see a sandstorm though. Could only find a green, cancelled battles for commons and poors to allow for any other pet hunters that came by. I'll use a stone on this one for sure, now to get the darn minfernal.
unholy hell, how long do I have to sit here and watch nothing happen before a sandstorm comes? Â What is the frequency? Â Is there even a set frequency for the storms? Â I have been leaving my mage there for a month now and log on daily at different times. Â I even try the pre-made groups utility to realm hop and no one has them... Â gah!
How often are there sandstorms, I notice that it seems like once a month someone posts that there is one going on..I didn't know if it was just a coincidence.
Logged onto my Horde DK just for the heck of it. Had him camped at the Great Chasm. Wondered why the screen looked so fuzzy then reallized....SANDSTORM! Caught my uncommon on my third try! Now, for the mythical Minfernal...
Was parking toons on several servers and went to Proudmoore tonight.....flew right into a sandstorm...Oh yeah!!
Also got mine on Thrall today. Had left an alt there and was logging in on him periodically to check. Was doing that for about 3 days, and today when I logged in there was a sandstorm going. Tons of them were crawling about. Managed 2 rares and a rare Sand Kitten. The sandstorm stayed up forever (I got tired and logged before it ended) and there were plenty of spawns and respawns.
Just got this on Argent Dawn. Parked a toon in Tanaris at one of the bug camps and waited for sandstorm. Now just have to wait for summer for Zookeeper. :)
I've been regularly checking Tanaris for sandstorms ever since Pandaria opened, but had only seen one sandstorm before this morning (and there were no spawns at that time.) But today I finally got lucky. Not only did I arrive during a sandstorm, the spawns were plentiful. As I flew around The Gaping Chasm (I never needed to check The Noxious Lair), there were dozens of the little teal bugs waiting to be battled. My second battle was an Uncommon. Because the respawns were so frequent, and there was only one other person in that area battling, I decided to keep hunting. I wound up getting one Rare of each breed. It took me about 25 minutes total. I never had to search for more than five seconds to find another spawn. By the time I left, there were two or three other players looking for pets and the respawn rate was just as plentiful. Hopefully this is the norm now and it won't be quite so painful to get one of these weather-dependent bugs.
Blizzard made the Silithid Hatchling "Less Elusive" in the latest 5.1 Hotfix patch :D

I'm leveling like 8 pets right now, and they were all in that 12-14 range, so I basically just went around tanaris killing the local battle pets, getting mithril nodes, fishing oily blackmouths. . .basically just things to keep me busy. Â Eventually (maybe 1.5 to 2 hours), a sandstorm started, and I rushed over to the gaping chasm to find it full of Silithid Hatchlings. Â Got a poor quality one and left the others for other people, I'll upgrade it to a rare with the battle stones coming next patch.
I logged in in the middle of a storm and there were at least 15 in each of the 2 places. There were some players around but i think there were enough pets since i managed to get my rare. I also think that they do respawn.
I logged on to a storm. I must have just missed the start because I stuck around for about 2 hours and not one hatchling spawned! Not sure if it's bugged or what. The respawns seem random and are NOT guranteed. Your best bet is to be there right when a sandstorm begins. This is more frustrating than the Minfernal
