Patch 5.1.0 | Posted: November 27, 2012
Can be found in the Savage Thicket, alongside Primordial Drakes.
Level 0: 0 0 0
These beautiful drakes can be found across the shores of Northrend.
Was in Sholazar for approximately 20 minutes killing drakes, eggs, babies...all to no avail. Speculation: killing these mobs does NOT force a spawn. Guess I'll try back later =)
A breed 4 coupled with an Anubisath Idol makes an ideal duo for fast levelling other pets via the dailty tamer battles.

THE SAVAGE THICKET. All you need to know if you want to get this pet. As soon as I landed there, found an uncommon on the spot. Waited about 10 minutes and 3 poors spawned. Till trying to get a rare. Went out around a quarter to 5 am server time~
Do NOT use terrible turnip's Sunlight ability when trying to catch this guy. With its heals and its own health pool boost from Ancient Blessing, this thing turns into a terrifying unkillable GOD in Sunlight.
On the plus side, once you HAVE caught him, the turnip and the proto have fantastic synergy as a pet catching/levelling team. The turnip catches whatever you're hunting, then the proto eats all its friends while they barely dent its vast sunlight and blessing enhanced health.
I just upgraded my Emerald Proto-Whelp from uncommon to rare and have been power leveling her in Gorgrond. Lots of flying pets to battle over there so Emerald Bite and Ancient Blessing, so she's been soloing mobs over there starting at level 19 and already up to 24. Move over Nexus Whelpling, I think my Emerald is my new favorite Dragonkin!!!
Breath/Emerald Bite + Emerald Presence + Emerald Dream
This is the set-up that makes the P/P Emerald Proto-Whelp a force to be reckoned with. It is excellent against Magic Pets and the Scourge of Flying Pets everywhere. There is not a single Flying Pet out there the Emerald Proto-Whelp is incapable of devouring without a second thought, and any pet that has smaller, multi-hit abilities like Stampede should just give up outright.
Emerald Proto-Whelp (P/P) perfect pet for taking out the Pandaren Air Spirit and its buddies (solo). They are all weak attack against dragonkin. Also a pretty solid pet for pvp battles as well.
Ridiculously strong healing pet and beastly against flyers.
Use Emerald Bite, Emerald Presence and Emerald Dream and you are set to go.
EP is a strong shield, scaling well with its skyhigh power and providing protection while you snooze and amputating dots. Heals scales extremely well with high power.
One of my most used pve pets. Even more durable than Son of Animus.
My favorite pet for leveling and running the trainer circuit. Good Multi Family attack, dragon passive and dual heals means they can often solo the entire team by themselves and end up with full health. Not so great against legendaries as blocks, feints offer greater utility against extreme damage.
This being my first comment i felt it should be used on this pet Ancient Blessing and Emerald Dream make this pet nearly unbeatable also a high attack doesnt hurt either :)
Not sure if it's CRZ bugging it or if I'm just really unlucky compared to the other commenters. I've been here killing the protodrakes for over 2 hours now and have yet to see a single spawn. =/
LOL! Apparently I just needed to whine about it. Tabbed back in from writing this and one spawned right in front of me. A rare one to boot! :)
Followed some of the comments here and killed some of the protos while I waited. Took all of two minutes for one to spawn and for me to capture it. :) Not sure if killing the protos really works, or just a funny coincidence though.
this one can heal A LOT and can go from catachable to full health in 2 turns, I had an uncommon and it took out 3 rares of about the same level, I finally caught a common one but I switched to level 25s and made sure they all could heal. it (the common) healed enough to be a pain to catch
P/P would seem to be better for Emerald Dream, but P/S for Proto-Strike, which leads to a dilemma since they are both strong skills. One of each breed solves the problem. :-)
This is an excellent pet for one of your backline pets in the 15 daily Tanaan Jungle pet battles. I have found that the P/P breed is best for these fights for two main reasons. One is because Emerald Presence blocks more damage (90 per hit) and two is because Emerald Dream gains more health (1236) than the other breeds. Both "reduced damage" and "health gained" are a function of power ... not health or speed.
Still appears to be quite a long wait to get the breed that you want (let alone a rare). In 10+ days of checking (spending 30 minutes or more in the spawning zone), I managed to find about 12. Lucky enough, 1 blue P/P, 1 blue P/B and a white P/P (stone it later). Killing off the other nearby pets didn't seem to have any effect on the spawns. It's a ridiculous battler that everyone should own. Just takes some effort. Ridiculous combo of power/toughness, all but unkillable.
Am I doing something wrong? I've come here for no less than 2 hours a day every day for over a week. I have yet to see a single one. I've flown in a circle, I've sat and camped, I've killed dragon mobs, I've killed other bpets, I've killed critters. Nothing works. I am on Stormrage and have never even seen so much as a whisper of this thing.
I'm not sure if Blizzard changed something but I popped on Earthen Ring and their usual spawning area was full of them of every breed, I didn't even have to go looking.
This is by far the best pet to have as a noob like myself. I have yet to loose a wild pet battle with this guy. Find an area with a lot of pet battles availble and you can go from battle to battle never have to bandage or revive pet. Unless you have to heal your carry pet. Cast Emerald pressence, Emerald bite, until either emeral pressence falls off or your a little less than half life than cast emerald dream. Rinse and repeat.
P/P caught 4/4/15, so they're still available in v6.1.2
