Patch 5.1.0 | Posted: November 27, 2012
Can be found at The Dry Hills, alongside Witchwing Harpies.
Level 0: 0 0 0
They only get more beautiful as they age.
Huh, just found out that my Rare level 25 Harpy is male, not sure what to think about this.
Why does this pet have a double gender? She's obviously female and only female. That's like saying Grunty should have double gender -_-
Don't forget, if you have a Terrible Turnip, set first ability to Weakening Blows!!! This guarantees that you will not kill the pet you are trying to capture. Works best to have your Turnip at max level (25) and you can capture any lower level pets including Level 1's and you will never kill it by accident...
I spent three hours looking for a harpy and just one spawned in all of that time, it's an uncommon but I'm happy, I renamed in Exwife.
Finally found a rare one of these, and... it turned out to be male. I don't even know.
Flew around Dry Hills at 1:05am server time, found just one, unfortunately, it's a poor.. :O right next to a Windcaller xD
Caught the pet, and the Windcaller screamed at me "You will pay for my sister's death!" XD so cool xDÂ
Found Harpy Youngling after 20 or 30 mins (Dry Hills).... 1st one was a poor and there were a lot of x-relm'ers and after another 20mins I found a uncommon but still no rare.
Can confirm that they are still around post legion launch, logged in at 5:24 ST today and there were a few flying around!
This was the only pet in the Northern Barrens that I didn't have. They were never there when I went. Sunday night (10:00 EST) I decided to get serious and sent my main and 4 mage farming alts (5 servers in all, no cross-realm overlap). And I saw a grand totally of 3. I was ok with the 1 UC I bagged, but I parked the toons there to check in the AM. Today (7:30 am EST) I saw tons of them on all 5 servers with at least 1 R each server. (Got two on a server.) So get up early to hunt these beauties.
The area was full of harpy younglings every three or so times I got there - until I tried to kill the bad quality ones in hopes to get a rare to spawn. It was very stupid because they really do not respawn fast. Didn't help me at all and now any others trying to get the pet will not find anything. :( Much better to just come again later.
These get so hung up in thier animations and freeze, it make battles take forever.
I was able to find them where it says they are located on the map. If you want all rares they are pretty easy to come by. I'm on wyrmrest Accord and after flying about fighting ALL the Harpy Younglings I was able to find 3 rares after 30-45 mins. I was able to catch all of them using the previously caught Youngling (Originally caught an uncommon one.)
I came out to look at the spawn place for these guys while I was gathering supplies for the Alliance quest Battlefield Barrens in 5.3 and the whole area was covered in harpy younglings. As the zone gets phased to allow you to fight 90's while letting low levels quest in peace, it gave me a full spawn of harpy younglings in the Dry Hills. It was awesome, I just ran around fighting harpy pet after harpy pet till my rare popp'd and I caught it.
I searched for hours for this pet - and when it spawned, it was only a grey one. That's really sad because I hoped for a green (or even a blue) one. :(
No one but me was in the area but it only spawned one Harpy although I camped the place.
This little lady is a powerhouse! She was very easy to capture in Northern Barrens. She leveled up quickly and is my "go-to" pet when I'm farming for rares of frogs and turtles. She might fall under the Humanoid section, but she is a "Sky-Lord" that is very fast and efficient at hunting all Aquatics.
I killed or battled a half dozen pets in the area, then came back and saw two harpies spawn. I don't think killing the critters affects it. You need to free up spaces in the Northern Barrens population for new spawns of any kind. In this case, it does help to go out and do the work and reduce the pet population in the area, not just hang around waiting for spawns :)
These pets do seem to have a bit of a long spawn timer. Keep checking back and you will find them.
The strategy that worked for me was to park a lvl 45 alt there, and when checking, ride around covering all the Dry Hills area, including the entrance by the prowlers/lions, and entrance on the opposite side...basically everywhere you see an adult harpy.
In some ways I think being on a ground mount is better in this case, because you don't have to go through all the trees, land, target, fight. Create a macro to target the youngling, and bind a key to interact. That should help a lot.
Got a green pretty quickly after getting there which is amazing since there were about 6 other aliance and horde there too. I battled all the pets that were around the harpies at the dry hills and one popped pretty quickly afterwards.
Found one at The Dry Hills it was of poor quality but there was a few other people around so I took it for now will try back again for a rare next week proabably :)
Found one up around 7am server 4:20 pst, it was poor quality *update* went back tonight 11/29 6am server time to hunt for a rare found around 15+ up, burned through 10, 8poors 2normal 1 rare. They all seem to have equalized stats (not speedy or ap weighted) I checked 4 others (engaged then logged) that were up 3 regulars one uncommon. It seems like a lot of the 5.1 spawn rates have been fixed, buffed or they were all just scarce due to so many people hunting them yesterday.
