Notes:
This pet was formerly known as 'Tiny Black Whelpling'.

Breanni Says:

I have a friend who found a Dark Whelping months before the Burning Crusade hit. She kept it in her bank vault, intending to eventually give it to a blood elf warlock. But it was alomst a year until the Blood Elves joined the horde. Alas, they are finally together and they make a gorgeous pair, each with their glowing green eyes and tormented souls. Then again, the whelp’s soul is only tormented because he spent eleven months confined in the Orgrimmar bank!

Fun to bring out during an Onyxia raid- "Help! I have a whelp on me!"

I had this on my orc hunter back when it was called the tiny black whelpling. A friend had given it as a gift before they quit. It always made me a little sad because it was bound to the hunter and I wanted it on my more active character, and current persona Snowight. So a while ago i log into the hunter looking to pilfer her for mats, the name change must have unbound it! I moved it over immediately and this pet is out pretty often.

This was the first whelpling I have ever gotten. I got it in that little pathway in the badlands, and boy was I excited! I ended up farming it once again in the same area for a friend as a surprise, and got yet one more as well for selling on the AH. I have tried farming this on numerous other characters in dustwallow marsh but no luck. I seem to have had much better luck in the badlands, if this helps anyone who is sick of trying in dustwallow =)

There's always a surreal feeling that you get when it's been a long grind for a pet.. like you're sleep deprived and slightly confused at what's happened, then it hits you! That's how I felt after finally getting this guy to drop. He's still one of my favourites

i think farming it in badland would be the wiser of the 2 places. being that the ONY raid is back and running for 80's there are more people in the zone, IMO

Definitely use the area in South East Badlands if you want to farm this pet. By the time I'd finished either the north or south cluster of whelps, the other was mostly respawned.

I farmed with a level 80 protection paladin, no issues whatsoever, the only problem I can see someone having would be if you're low enough to be bugged by the elites in the middle.

This pet is pretty fun from an RP perspective. I mean owning a baby member of the black dragon flight? Epic indeed.

I had great success with farming the dark whelp in the Badlands. So far it dropped the quickest of all the whelps for me. Maybe that's just luck...but the Badlands has a fairly easy path to run.

Got this one today, after having killed a whopping 734 whelps over the last few days. Such a gorgeous little thing, who looks very good with blood elves indeed.

Now to farm for the last two. Blah, frost resistant mobs...

As Darias mentioned, the Badlands (Lethlor Ravine) is the easiest place. Also, if you have mining, there's some gold and diamond nodes there. While I was farming these Whelplings, people would run through to to the mining nodes, leaving the Whelplings for me.
The problem Dustwallow Marsh is that they are so spread apart that it makes them very cumbersome to find.

you gotta watch out in dustwallow it only drops off whelps most of the ones in dustwallow are "hatchling"s and it won't drop off those

My husband and I farmed this baby for 4 hours :( i thought i would never get it!! we were faced with competing against other people trying to farm in the Badlands. I was getting discouraged. My husband convinced me to keep going.

4 hours later, he says "lets quit, im getting tired" and i agreed..though i was a little disappointed.

but come to find out, he got it and just wanted to surprise me. I love this whelping!! its very cute. Hope it takes you guys less time to farm than it took me!

After ignoring farming these for ages due to stories of painful hours of hunting, I was questing in the area (for Loremaster) and decided to give it a half hearted attempt. On about my 8th kill it dropped! Yay!

The 4 whelplings are among my favorite pets of all, I've farmed all 4 of them and I must admit the Black one is my favorite which makes it all the more sad that it's lost it's place on the top 10 in favor of some rather...uninspired opponents.
Hopefully in the near future the Bronze whelp will be available so all the flights can be acquired at last.

I was very lucky with this little guy. I got him after only 123 kills. I tried the searing whelps in Dustwallow first, but saw here that the Badland whelps were recommended. After only 93 scalding whelps, I got him. Thanks for the great advice!

After 6 hours of grinding I finally got that little cutey. :D It was worth every minute I have spent in Badlands (Lethlor Ravine). At the end my BF was looking at me like I'm some sort of a freak lol. I advise empty bags cos' the whelps seem to spawn faster if you loot all of them. Apart from that there is no golden mean to get it. Patience and patience I guess. GL !!! :)

6 hours and 14 netherweave bags full of loot later, the whelpling drops :)
The SE of Badlands had a great respawn time, so I highly recommend farming there. Also, if you are a miner the nodes there have a fast respawn as well. Mostly mithril with the occasional gold.

If you are farming this little beauty I suggest you do it in the Badlands instead of going to Dustwallow Marsh. I just finished farming him and have only been at it for about an hour. This is one of the easier pets to farm. Good luck catching yours!

This was the first of the four whelps I got, I tried for him a year ago and got bored, but I wasn't such a determined collector back then :D

He dropped just as I was about to log off and this sparked my love for pet collecting :)

Farmed for more than 8 hours, 1329 mobs killed, didnt find one =( this is quite sad =(

---

After trying more than 9 hours and killing more than 1500 mobs I decided to quit, my boyfriend tryed a little more without any result. I started trying again next morning and, without any expectations, Ive dropped it after less than 100 kills =). It was really surprising lol
My conclusion is that It doesnt matter how many whelplings you kill, its only luck!

So good luck you all ^^

Got this after farming for 2 hours in Badlands, best place to farm by a mile, by the time you have killed all the whelps(north and south) they will respawn again where u started, so makes the effort alot easier.

I went to Badlands to farm two of these. (One for me, one for the gf)
Got both drops pretty quickly... maybe killed 100 whelps total.

Maybe it was just luck but was much easier for me than any of the other whelplings.

Finally dropped for me in Badlands after several hours of farming and 3087 kills. Farmed with my level 80 druid so I was able to one-shot the mobs. Got an Epic and 2 Rare world drops in the first 500 kills. Kept checking to make sure I was farming the right whelps, but it finally dropped. Good luck to everyone farming this one.

I got this one awhile back, and it's my first actually-farmed-for pet, and one of my favorites (I'm a dragon/drake fanatic, much like with reptiles) quite a few greens dropped, and farming in the Badlands is MUCH better than trying to scavenge the few in Dustwallow... believe me.
