In years prior, this pet could be found in Lord Ahune's Ice Chest. As of 2010, it appears that it no longer drops from Ahune. However Blizzard has confirmed that this pet will become available in some other manner in the future.

Breanni Says:

This pet's "smokin'"! In fact, he's the "hottest" pet in the game! While he's quite the little "spitfire", he can certainly "light up" a room with his "warmth". I imagine he'll "rekindle" the desire to collect minipets in many an adventurer. What? Too many fire puns? I bet that really "burns" you up, huh? *giggles* Awww... you're getting all "fired up" over nothing! Ok, ok, I'll stop before I get "flamed" to death. Heh.

The Scorchling draws attention because he is glowing and leaves a trail. It is also totally cool when he fireballs critters. I wish there were more elemental pets. We get this guy and the Kirin Tor. I hope they eventually add one for each of the schools of magic... or the elemental planes to be all cataclysm-esque.

Edit: They added Frigid Frostling :) a few planes left

Willy (with an eye beam) and KT (with a frost tomb) nuke critters as well.

We are trying to save this pet from oblivion.
Blues recommended to post on Suggestion forums and so we did.
But to get their attention I am urging you to go and bump us.

***Update***
Blue has confirmed that while it's gone from Midsummer loot list it will make a comeback :)
Data miners on PTR have found LFG events tied to some elemental bosses.

You may defeat Lord Ahune once per day on heroic mode, and once a day from the regular slave pens daily you get from the npc right before the Ice Stone.
Heroic mode allows for a retry if you fail over and over until you down Lord Ahune (gives you a badge on heroic, so it saves you to the instance for a that day).
But on regular, once you get the daily and turn it in; if you fail to kill Lorn Ahune-you lose the chance for The Scortchling, until daily's reset. (or unless you have more people) GL!!

I really wish this pets droprate would get changed. It's arguably one of the rarest pets simply because it's only available for a small while each year, based upon summons and drop chance.

I had hoped that it might get the same treatment as the squashling but unless it gets it's only non-FoS achievement, it will probably be the same irritating way to get this that it always is. If you have this one, count yourself lucky!

This pet has a cool reaction if you have him out when you summon Ahune. When I did it, the words it made me say, my scorchling repeated. It was pretty cool!

Yeah he is rare to find. I was able to get him on the fifth day of the event and I spent about 50g for the summon and 100g for the pet. When it drop, one of the member of my party went woot 150g for a summon and a pet. 600g was a good price for this pet.

I've done some testing with the pet.
And I can confirm that his flame has a 3 min cooldown (Just like Willy's eye beam).

Also, unlike I hoped, The elemental does not leave Deeprun Rat Kabob after they burn a rat.
And not a Roasted Boar Meat after they they burn a swine either.

I'm just plain mad about this. If you are frustrated by not being able to obtain this pet this year you should go straight to the suggestion forum: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25482070208&sid=1 and let them know. The Scorchling pet was the only reason I looked forward to the Summer festival this year and now this... Its cool that theres a new pet but still, extremely disappointed.

A blue poster confirmed that while the Scorchling is permanently removed from Midsummer Festival, it's not gone.

It will return and it'll have company: mini elementals of the other elements! How they will be obtainable we can only speculate, but since in Cataclysm we will be traveling in all four of the Elemental Planes, it wouldn't be hard to find a reputation, a quest or a mob to tie them with.

As a dedicated fire-mage this is my most sought after pet, so cannot wait for it to be re-added in the future.

As of the 2010 Midsummer Fire Festival this pet was removed from the drop table. It was instead replaced with Frigid Frostling. Blizzard asked the community for a response as to how to implement the Scorchling back into the game, such as a quest or be a reward like the Spirit of Summer. As of now though the Scorchling is unobtainable, making it even more rare than it already it is.

A very very rare pet, in the 70's Ahune was a difficult boss because few higher end players bothered to farm him.
Now at 80 even though much easier to farm very few people were willing to group up during the summer to kill him which keeps this pet obnoxiously rare compared to other event pets..

Until we see a blue post stating that the Frigid Frosting is replacing the Scorchling this year, I wouldn't lose all hope. The drop rate was/is already low and not enough data has come in yet since it's only the first day of the event.

I read on some sites that the scorching IS still a possible drop, with people saying they got it from the bag. It looks like you can get this pet or a new pet, which comes from the item "ice chip" (it is also in the satchel). All I can say is I've done the boss twice... only emblems both times (same goes for the people in my group).

edit: I guess it was a bug or a lie, Blizz confirmed pet is no longer available. thanks for the -ratings, was just going based on what I saw at the time :)

Currently, there are several suggestions on the forums for the Scorchlings return: As a vendor item, bought with Burning Blossoms; The final reward for a new quest line; An achievement reward; As loot for the Chilled Satchel or Ahune's Chest...
Lets hope Blizzard approves of one of these suggestions, and brings back our mini-fire elemental!

EDIT: Happily, our Scorchling will be back! Expect to see his return come Cataclysm, along with some more elemental friends! ^o^

"... But as I said in this case, the Scorchling will return elsewhere along with some friends representing the remaining elements. "

It's a good move for Blizz to let you que up for a holiday boss any number of times per day during the event. This way it's actually feasable to crunch out this guy. How works out before is that
5 times a day x 14 days = 70 times killing Ahune

Even if you had managed this, you would only see the pet drop once out of all the groups (statistically, you might see it twice or zero times) No pet has caused more frustration for me other than the Kirin Tor Familiar.
